War is Hell, 1965

War is Hell, 1965

Seen here is a picture of a US soldier who has the words "WAR IS HELL" written on his helmet. The identity of this soldier had been lost for several decades; however, his identity has finally been rediscovered.

Larry Wayne Chaffin was just 19 when this picture was taken. He served exactly one year in Vietnam. His face gives the impression that he is younger, and this aspect played a part in this picture's iconic legacy, as it highlighted how young many of the men who served in the Vietnam war. The average age of US soldiers in Vietnam was 22.

Chaffin survived his time in Vietnam, but he found it hard to integrate back into civilian life. Chaffin sadly passed away at the age of 39 in 1985 from complications due to diabetes.

It is suspected that his diabetes developed due to Chaffin's expose to Agent Orange, a highly toxic chemical used by US forces to kill foliage in order to expose enemy positions.
