80 Years Ago Today on May 18, 1943, USMC Captain Joseph J. Foss, accompanied by his mother and his wife June, went to the White House where President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented him with the Congressional Medal of Honor.  His citation was as follows: “For outstanding heroism and courage above and beyond the call of duty as executive officer of Marine Fighting Squadron 121, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, at Guadalcanal. Engaging in almost daily combat with the enemy from 9 October to 19 November 1942, Capt.  Foss personally shot down 23 Japanese planes and damaged others so severely that their destruction was extremely probable. Yes you read correctly black American soldiers had to fight their own white American soldiers, while in England, where they were fighting for the world. Why? Because the English town of Bamber Bridge in Lancashire was not segregated so they treated the black soldiers like all other races, aka blacks were free to eat, drink anywhere, BUT back in America segregation of blacks and whites still existed.
